ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplantation ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplantation ABO incompatible kidney transplantation is indicated for patients for whom no ABO-identical or minor mismatch donor is available. Since the author and his colleagues performed the first ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation in Japan in 1989, 400 such transplantations have been performed in 41 hospitals in Japan and this practice has contributed to a number of new developments. One is a clearer and more suitable model for conceptualising the mechanism of humoral immune response which enables identification of antigens and antibodies and a therapeutic strategy against rejection. The rejection mechanisms are discussed not only from the perspective of immunology but also viewed from different angles, including anatomy, microscopic and macroscopic pathology, molecular biology and haematology. Immunosuppressive therapy is discussed, divided in four categories: extracorporeal immunomodulation with removal of humoral antibodies; drug therapy to suppress cellular immunity; splenectomy; and anticoagulation therapy. Surgical procedures for kidney transplantation and splenectomy are treated, including discussion of the best timing for the latter. The book gives an overview of the current status with statistics and results of questionnaires and ends with discussions of 17 case histories.

Living Donor Kidney Transplantation Living Donor Kidney Transplantation

Living donor kidney (LDK) transplantation has become the definitive approach to the treatment of end-stage renal failure, providing a better quality of life and the best opportunity for survival. A timely compendium of the current practice of LDK transplantation presented by international experts, this text explores a number of controversial aspects of this innovative technique. Discussing the current situation in detail, the authors focus on the responsibility of the medical community to the live kidney donor as a patient and the potential for complacency regarding donor risk. The authos also emphasize the ethical principles that must dictate practice in LDK transplantation for the foreseeable future.

A Gift of Life: A Page From the Life of a Living Organ Donor A Gift of Life: A Page From the Life of a Living Organ Donor This is the extraordinary story of an ordinary family caught in a life or death struggle to save one of their own. With the possibility of a sibling becoming a living organ donor, this courageous family had to face the fact that they could lose not one, but two members. This story is told in a light hearted, yet no-holds-barred manner.

During the process of becoming a donor, the author discovered that there was no information to be found concerning the donors point of view. This book has become the reource for those families considering organ donation and those who have already donated. Even though it is told from the donor's point of view, it focuses on the recipient as well.

This book has been endorsed by members of organizations such as: UNOS, the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin, the National Donor Family Council, and the New York Regional Transplant Program to name a few.
